Al Gilbert November 24, 2025

Alan Charles Gilbert passed away peacefully after a short illness at Chapman House Residential Hospice, Owen Sound on Monday November 24, 2025 at the age of 73 years. Devoted husband to the late former Barbara Diane Wright (2025) for 49 years. Beloved father of Allana (Jim Lewis), of Paisley, and Rebecca “Becky” Gilbert (fiancé Gregory Stam), of Port McNichol. Cherished grandfather of Quaiden, Peyton, Riley, Reese, and Red. Dear brother of Clifford Gilbert (Ann), of Purple Valley; and brother-in-law of Joanne Thomas (late Stan), of St. Mary’s, Donna Steip, of St. Thomas, Betty Lawrence (late Bob), of Sarnia, Paul Wright (late Kathy Balls), and Connie Stewart (late Daryl McCartney), both of Wiarton. Sadly missed by his many nieces and nephews. Family wish to thank the doctors and nursing staff of the Owen Sound Hospital and Chapman House for the wonderful care given to Al. A service to celebrate Al’s life will be announced in January, 2026 Arrangements entrusted to the Thomas C. Whitcroft Funeral Home & Chapel, Sauble Beach (519) 422-0041.     Al was my first fire chief. He was an exceptional leader. He kept the department a close group. Firefighters say they always remember their first fire. I remember mine and Al was there leading from the front of the house. He knew how to connect with each one of us. I can easily remember joking with him, making him laugh so hard he would have tears. In his honour, the Town flag has been lowered, we have made a donation to Chapman House and we will observe a moment of silence at the upcoming Council meeting.
