Grace Mary Jones (nee Hyatt), born to Wilbert (Wib) Hyatt and Ellen (nee Robinson-Porter) on February 6, 1952. Beloved wife of 54 years to Howard Malcolm Lynne Jones. Beloved mother to April, Cory, Curtis (Wesley) and Toni (Blair). Doting Grandmother to Mitchell (Taylor) Little, Max Daugharty, Evelyn Jones and Alana Jones-Pawley. Great grandmother to Harper and baby Little on the way. Dear sister of Margaret (Gary) Collins, Neil (late Lois) Hyatt, Allan (late Donajean) Hyatt, Patrice (William) Romitz, David (Snjezana) Hyatt, Douglas (Donna) Hyatt and Edward (Tracey) Hyatt. Cherished sister in law of Jean (late Joe) Borrows, Sam (Dorothy) Jones, Laurie-Ann Drane (Brian), Cheryl Jones, Rose Jones, Roxy Boudrias (late John) and Kathy Jones. Predeceased by her parents, Howards parents Una Evelyn Page, Norman Peter Joshua Jones and Vernon Jones, sibling in-laws Norma (Bill), Norman (Wilma), Joan Lois, Shirley (Tom), Robert (Vera), William (Nancy) and Dale (Lynda). Missed by her many nieces and nephews and extended family.
Grace Jones passed away peacefully on Friday, October 18th after a brief and courageous battle with cancer at Chapman House Hospice in Owen Sound. In her 73rd year, Grace spread light throughout the community that shone brightly, though too briefly. Grace was the third of eight Hyatt children born to loving parents Wilbert (Wib) and Ellen. Lessons of love, loyalty and hard work were the outcome of her childhood that included stops in Lion’s Head, Mar, Purple Valley and finally Wiarton. It was while attending school in Wiarton that she met the man who was to become her love for life, Howard.
Married in 1970, Grace and Howard embarked on a life together that included the arrival and raising of four children, spread over a near two decade gap. She raised her children with love, tenderness, empathy and an uncanny knack for knowing when they had done something mischievous or wrong, no matter how well they thought they had hidden it. Loved by all animals, her tenderness extended to the many canine companions over the years, and her knack for attracting all critters, not just birds, to her birdfeeders once led to a brush with a black bear on the front porch.
An avid volunteer when the occasion called for it to support her family and community, Grace was well known in the Neyaashiinigmiing for her baking and cooking skills. Her pies, lemon squares and butter tarts were a sought after commodity, though Howard often proclaimed she gave him the piece of strawberry rhubarb pie that didn’t have any sugar.
It was no surprise then, when the Nshiime Daycare opened at Cape Croker in 1986 that Grace became the first cook, much to the chagrin of her family at home which had hoped to monopolize her cooking. Instead, she continued to feed not only her own family, but most of the children within the community who were of daycare age. She became much more than a cook to the staff and children of the Daycare as a seemingly forever presence in the kitchen and in the classrooms in her 32 years of service. Her lasting legacy is one that spans two generations of children in the community, and has been described as kind, generous, loving and caring. In a world that is at times short on these things, ‘Auntie’ Grace as she is known to the entirety of the Neyaashiinigmiing community, somehow always had more to spare, for any and all that came within her aura.
Grace greatly believed in the strength of community and was proud not only of the accomplishments of her own children, but of anyone that was from the community of Neyaashiinigmiing. She would excitedly discuss the accomplishments of any and all that she was aware of, sometimes to the confusion of her audience who wasn’t quite sure who she was talking about. Her excitement was infectious though, and her laugh, smile and wit with a sarcastic deadpan delivery was hard to top, and any confusion gave way to understanding and a sharing of joy.
Her greatest happiness in life included cruising around with her soul mate, whether on the road or trails across the homestead; catching up and visiting with friends and family, especially her grandchildren, and simply taking care of other people.
“In a world where you can be anything, be kind.” Grace will be missed.
Donations to Grey Bruce Hospice (Chapman House) in lieu of flowers would be greatly appreciated.

One of the best moms I’ll ever meet. Sure, she wasn’t the best at Scrabble, but we were all pretty ruthless. Her smile, laughter, and wisdom is a treasure. I think what I miss most about her is just her presence. She was always welcoming, non-judgmental, and had a heart that loved deeply. My heart and prayers are with you Pa, Cory, April, Curt & Wes, Toni & Blair… and the kids.

I am so saddened to hear of Grace. She was such a caring loving and thoughtful woman. I first got to know Grace in 1972 when April and Kaurina were in hospital with whooping cough. A few years later we were hockey Moms cheering on Cory and Mark. We sure had some good chats over the years. You are all in Our Thoughts and Prayers at this most difficult time.

I wish to express my sympathy to the Jones family on the passing of Grace. I only met Grace several times, but I am touched by the obituary which well explains the outpouring of love and loss by those who knew her well. She was obviously a wonderful influence on many and words never adequately describe the loss of such a loved one.
We know a tree by its fruit , and having known Cory for his many years of working with our company and seeing his leadership and care for others mature, then I know for sure that Grace was a great “tree” . Many have been blessed by Grace’s love, care and mother’s heart.
My prayers are for Cory ,Howard, and all of the family at this difficult time.
