Kathryn Sam-Guindon
On a warm day in July there was a call from afar for a host of new Angels. Kathryn Sam-Guindon was born in Wiarton on July 14, 1956 to parents, Patricia Sam and William Sam, and passed away peacefully surrounded by loved ones in London, Ontario on Friday, July 11, 2025 at the age of 68.
She spent her entire working career in Wiarton as an Ontario Land Surveyor (OLS) and Canada Land Surveyor (CLS). In fact, she felt very privileged to be one of an historical group of the first half dozen or so female OLS’s and maybe even less than a handful of female CLS’s to graduate and practice land surveying. Her signature can be viewed over copious land survey documents regarding the Bruce Peninsula and Bruce County. She could have worked anywhere in the world but she loved the bush, she loved the uncomplicated life to be found on the Peninsula and she wanted to be close to her family.
She spent her ‘Kath Time’ cycling, skating, skiing, dancing, at the beach and shopping, which was an Olympic sport for her. Often she would crank up her playlist in the kitchen and work away.
Her trademark was ‘fun’ with a capital ‘F’. She mastered her cooking skills through trial and error. If there was a good recipe she would keep changing it until it was great which then made it ‘fun’ to eat. She treated family the same way. A special occasion at the house was not a success unless everyone was having ‘fun’. She loved to shop. She discovered ‘fun’ from one of her aunts who told her, “never pay full price”. If something had to be done that she disliked, she would complain about it until it was ‘fun’.
She leaves behind her loving husband of 45 years, Mario Guindon, her daughter Addasonne (Kenny Mc Cormack) and her sweetheart five-year-old grandchild, Avery McCormack. Kathryn was sister to Sandra Sam (Mangan), Marie Moore (Donald), and Kenneth Sam. She was sister-in-law to Maurice Guindon (late), Therese Russell (Phillip), Julie Guindon, Viviane Guindon, Charlie Guindon (Pauline), Stephane Guindon (Beverly) and Eugene Guindon and had many nieces and nephews who loved their Auntie.
Special Thanks to all First Responders, the health team at the Wiarton Hospital, Ornge Air Ambulance Services and the health team at Victoria Hospital in London, Ontario.
A closed private family Memorial will be held at the Thomas C. Whitcroft Peninsula Chapel in Wiarton. Donations to the Wiarton Hospital, Ornge or the Grey Sauble Conservation Foundation Memorial Forest Tree Planting Program would be appreciated. Condolences may be expressed online at www.whitcroftfuneralhome.com

July 16, 2025 at 11:01 amThinking of all you and all your family in this tragic time, Addy. There is a hole in our lives when our parents leave that never heals over, and the five stages of grief are real. Just try to be kind to yourself, whatever the situation. Be good, kind, and forgiving to yourself. Reach out any time for anything if you need to talk to someone, or however I may help I will.

July 16, 2025 at 10:16 pmIt was always such a pleasure to serve Kathy her latte as she passed through Shallow Lake. She was always quick to ask how our resident cactus “Mr. Meanie” was doing and we always shared a laugh in the mischievous behaviours of the trickster cacti. Though our encounters were always brief, her warmth and good nature always shone through. She was a joyful part of my days at Amicis anytime she walked through the door. Condolences to her family and friends, may your memories and love that you shared with Kathy help bring you solace in this difficult time. Sending lots of love.

July 16, 2025 at 10:38 pmMario and Addasonne, I am so sorry to hear this news. Long after the days I sold Kathy surveying equipment, I would still stop in to see her on my way through Wiarton to our cottage on the peninsula. She always made time for me and if she was ever stressed out, she hid it well! I sampled her great cooking… the time she invited me to her home to have lunch with Mario, we barbecued hot dogs – my favourite! I’ll think of her fondly whenever I see the red trucks in the driveway. Thinking of you in your time of loss.
Bill and Barb (Harwood) Bartley says
July 17, 2025 at 8:24 amDear Mario, Addison and family, Bill and I cannot find the words to express our deepest shock and sadness upon hearing of Kathy’s passing. Kathy was always embracing and quick to share a smile, a hearty laugh, along with a welcoming chat sharing “ fun” facts of the day as we frequented “the office”. .over the many years. She dedicated her professional life to the love and respect of the land of the Bruce Peninsula, and throughout Grey and Bruce. She will always remain a part of our family! Sending you and your family our deepest sympathy at this very difficult time. . .
Kathryn Carey says
July 17, 2025 at 9:28 amHeaven gained an angel for sure. Kathryn was a favourite customer of mine at McKenzie’s for many years. She always had a smile and we often shared a laugh or two. We commiserated over the fact that no one ever spelled our name correctly. Thinking of you and hoping the precious memories soon overpower the pain.

July 18, 2025 at 11:39 amI was crushed to see Kathy’s memorial on the Association of Ontario Land Surveyors web page. It is such a shock to learn of the passing of one so young. I found Kathy to be a valued classmate at the U of T, supportive professional colleague and friend. We were both sworn in as Ontario Land Surveyors at about the same time back in 1983 and later as Canada Land Surveyors. It is with great sadness that I extend my deepest condolences to Mario and all Kathy’s family. She will be greatly missed.

July 18, 2025 at 12:17 pmDear Sam-Guidon Families:
John and I just heard this tragic news. While we have been so remiss about seeing Kathy and the rest of the gang, her sparkle has never diminished for me, no matter how far away I may have been. Now we will remember her, but never see her again.
Kathy brought sunshine into every space she was ever in. She was also generous, an incredible cook, very smart surveyor and science nerd, and a person with great compassion.
We will commit, once again, to make public streets safe for pedestrians and cyclists–this will be a tribute to Kathy and her family.

August 6, 2025 at 10:38 amMy deepest Sympathies to the Sam & Guindon families.
I grew up spending many hours in the bakery beside the Sam Restaurant. While the Sam “kids” were older then myself, I could recognize how important family was at the heart of their lives.
One of my best memories of early life was sitting in the Sam restaurant kitchen eating fries watching noon hour cartoons ,,, but the bigger memory was the laughter …. particularly from Kathy … while we were sitting there, I ran into Kathy (& her mother & daughter) at the pottery store on the airport road a few years ago and when she introduced me to her daughter, I asked Addasonne if she was #1 or #2 or #3. My parents friends could never remember my (or my brother’s) name, She looked at me with a smile and then looked at Cathy who was of course laughing at this point ,,,, we all agreed that Addasonne was all 3.
I can’t say enough about how beautiful a person Cathy was and my thoughts are with the families at this difficult time.
