Johnston, Phyllis – January 13, 1938 ~ March 11, 2025
Phyllis Mary Johnston (nee MacKnight) Treasured wife, mother, Maimie, sister, ‘Maimie Phyllis’, and friend passed away peacefully at Southbridge Owen Sound, surrounded by her family. Phyllis was an all-in kind of a person who set a shining example of the importance of faith and hard work throughout her life. She was a lifelong devoted Catholic who lived by the principle to love thy neighbour and embodied the concept that faith without works is dead. She spent many years giving freely of her time at St. Mary’s, Neyaashiinigmiing. Whether she was cleaning the church, starching altar linens or keeping the parish books, she had a smile on her face and a song on her lips. Mom was an excellent baker and always had apple pies, apple cake or homemade bread at the ready. It was difficult to learn her secrets though because everything she did was by touch; making it very difficult to measure ingredients to add to a recipe . Our home sparkled, add the love, devotion, some of Dad’s humour and it was a place that welcomed many people and offered a place to feel loved and at ease.
Loving wife to the late Edward “Ted” Louis Johnston (2020).
Mother of Judy (Peter), Darlene (Frank), Peggy (Jerry), and Edie (James). Forever remembered by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, Shawn (Paula), Brea, Hunter, Ryleigh; Jennifer (Mike); Ninnie (Keith); Brett (Jake), Jackson, Madison; Keenan (Tanya); Sophie (Grace); Michelle (Eric), Owen; Ted (Brittany), Olive; Louis; Emily (Robbie), and Minwaasige; Alex; Ruth.
Sadly missed by many cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.
Survived by her brother Ray (Beryl) MacKnight; brothers-in-law, Bill (Mary Ann) Johnston, Elmer MacDonald and Les Halman; sisters-in-law Bernice Hill, Sandra MacKnight , and Joyce MacKnight.
Predeceased by her parents Cecil & Irma MacKnight; Ted’s parents Alex & Beatrice Johnston; siblings Marie Crawford, Anna MacDonald, Winnifred Halman, Leonard MacKnight, and Joseph MacKnight; and Ted’s siblings Orville, Dolly, Ross, Keitha, Charles, Iola, and Eric.
Visitation will be held from the Maadookii Senior Centre, Neyaashiinigmiing on Friday, March 14, 2025 from 7-9 PM. A funeral Mass will be conducted from St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Neyaashiinigmiing on Saturday morning at 11 o’clock. Cremation to follow. Arrangements entrusted to the Thomas C. Whitcroft Funeral Home & Chapel, Sauble Beach (519) 422-0041. Donations to the St. Mary’s Catholic Church, Neyaashiinigmiing, or to Covenant House would be greatly appreciated. March 13, 2025 at 2:02 pmTo maimie’s ❤️ family and friends. A beautiful write up for a beautiful lady. Through my best friend Wendy, Maimie’s niece in NB, I got to meet this sweet woman. She welcomed me and my son (Wendy and her son Joe) into her home and cottage for a vacation trip when we all needed a change. She couldn’t do enough for us. Her daughters share her sweet kind ways. Wendy kept me informed of Phyllis’s life over the years. Her faith, love of family was evident in everything she did. My sincere condolences on the loss of your mom, grandmother, sister, Aunt and friend. May you find comfort in all the loving memories you shared. Much love Val xx
