Donald Goodwin

1931 - 2014

Of Owen Sound, and formerly of Sauble Beach and Kitchener suddenly after a brief illness at Grey Bruce Health Services Owen Sound on Sunday, December 21, 2014. Donald William Gillis Goodwin at the age of 83 years. He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Jean (nee Schaefer); son Don Jr. (Karen) of Calgary; daughter Carol (Gerry) of Winnipeg; 3 grandchildren, Matthew (Lindsay) of London UK, Tyler (Haley) of Calgary, Ivy (Josh) of Calgary; 2 great grandchildren Ava and Charlie. Born on August 13, 1931 in Heidelberg On, eldest of 5 children, Don married Jean on September 23, 1950. Don worked for B.F.Goodrich in Kitchener for many years, retired at age 59, and they moved to the cottage at Sauble Beach full-time a few years later. He and Jean thoroughly enjoyed their years "at the beach", did many activities with the Sandpipers, had many guests, and played cards for many an hour. Don was an active volunteer and was honoured by Volunteer of the Year award in 2011. Don and Jean were members of St. Philip's Lutheran Church in Kitchener, later at Grace Lutheran Church in Port Elgin, and enjoyed the summer fellowship at the Sauble Falls chapel. Highlights of Don's life include: their 25th wedding anniversary to Hawaii; children's and grandchildren's weddings; their 50th and 60th anniversaries at Sauble; trips to Regina, Thunder Bay and Edmonton to visit the newest grandchild; a trip to Mexico with the Kingstons; watching the Blue Jays play in Toronto; family Christmases and summer visits in Calgary; a bus trip to Thousand Islands one fall; meeting the little great-grandchildren last year; numerous social events with family and friends, that often involved Don winning at cards; and a long retirement. This past year was challenging for Don and Jean, with health issues, the sale of their home, and moves to nursing homes. The family is grateful for all the help from family, friends and neighbours. A special thank you to nephew Jeff Moser and wife Jennifer who logged many miles and ran many errands for "Unc". Don is fondly remembered by their children, his grandniece and nephew, Emily and Quintin. Family invite friends to gather for visitation at the Thomas C. Whitcroft Funeral Home & Chapel, 814 Bruce Rd. 8, Sauble Beach (519) 422-0041 on Tuesday December 30, 2014 from 1-2 PM, where a service to celebrate Don’s life will be conducted in the chapel at 2 o’clock. Pastor Dwight Biggs officiating. Spring interment in Zion Cemetery, Hepworth. Family would appreciate donations to the Canadian Diabetes Association or the charity of your choice.
