Gene Petonoquot – of Southampton, with his family at his side at Brightshores Health System – Owen Sound on Thursday November 21, 2024 at the age of 67 years. Beloved partner of the late Cheryl Dianne Besito (2022). Dear father of Genniene Petonoquot, of Saugeen First Nation #29, Justin Petonoquot, and Jobeno Petonoquot, both of Maniwake First Nation, Quebec, and Chris Thompson (Trisha Lavallee), of Saugeen First Nation #29. Cherished grandfather of Wesley Petonoquot and Sage Thompson. Dear brother of Joanne (Ted Mason), of Saugeen First Nation, and Paul King (late Cory), of Saugeen First Nation; and brother-in-law to Brenda Stevens (late Stuart), Delores Besito (Caroline), Joyce Besito, Sharon John (Perry), and Gordon Besito Jr. (Mary Ann), all of Saugeen First Nation #29. Proud uncle to Leanne (Travis Kahgee), Jason Petonoquot (partner Tina Roote), Mark Petonoquot, and Trevor King; and great-uncle of Alexandra Petonoquot, Nathaniel Kahgee, Jace Petonoquot, and Waylan Roote. Family wish to express their appreciation to the doctors and the staff of the Southampton Hospital, and to the doctors and nurses of Chapman House and the Oncology Unit of the Owen Sound Hospital for the care given to Gene. Predeceased by his parents Winnifred and Leslie Petonoquot; brothers, Maitland, Cary “Egg”, and Leslie “Les” (2024); and sisters, June King and Barbara Charlebois. Visitation will be held from the James Mason Memorial Community Recreation Centre, Saugeen First Nation #29 on Tuesday November 26, 2024 from 11 – 1, where a service to celebrate Gene’s life will be conducted at 1 o’clock. Cremation to follow. Donations to the Canadian Cancer Society or Canadian Diabetes Association would be appreciated. Arrangements entrusted to the Thomas C.     I will always remember Gene’s infectious laugh. When I was little, every time I was down, Gene would be there with a joke and his laugh. I always felt better after hearing that natural, uninhibited laugh.
    I will miss him, and my heart goes out to the family. You all have my thoughts in the coming days

    Gene and my husband Richard Kahgee were the best of friends during their teen years. To Sage, Wes and Gene’s entire family, please accept my sincere condolences upon Gene’s passing. Gene was a kind person and he always loved to laugh and bring joy to others.
